Modular Ethernet Switch / Router
The
Hirschmann Compact Modular (commonly referred to as 'MICE') range offers a scalable approach to industrial ethernet. This flexibility also allows a variety of network media (copper, PoE, SM, MM) and connectors to be accommodated by the one device. The demands of a growing network can be met with the latest technology, and paid for only when they are required rather than now 'just in case'.
System Components
In all models, an assembly comprises a base (as illustrated) together with media modules (shown below). Bases are available as either switches or routers and accommodate 2, 4 or 5 slots. With the addition of the optional MB-2T base extender, capacity can extend to 7 slots maximum. With media modules offering 2 or 4 ports, a capacity of 28 ports is available. Note: the base extender may only be used on 4 and 5 slot bases.
MICE media modules offer a wide range of choices of twisted pair and fibre optic ports and connectors, including combination modules, and specialty functions such as PoE or PTP. All twisted pair ports support autocrossing, autopolarity, and autonegotiation for simplicity in cabling and configuration.
The Gigabit Media modules provide 'combo' ports, where fibre transceiver modules may be inserted, substituting for a copper port.
All MICE fibre media modules use 'SC' type fibre connectors, note that SFP modules however use 'LC' type connectors.
Product Range
The Hirschmann MICE is available in three models:
- The MS20 is the base model and includes ethernet and fast ethernet switching for up to 24 ports when fully expanded.
- The MS30 adds Gigabit switching capability to form a high capacity backbone.
- The top end MS4128 'PowerMICE' product allows for 2 additional Gigabit ports, and is available with layer 3 (routing) capability. With the 2 module expansion base, a total port count of 28 ports, including 4 Gigabit ports is achievable.
Benefits of a modular design:
- Cost Effective: Pay for only what you need now on each switch.
- Flexibility: MICE provides the greatest number of fibre ports in the Hirschmann Rail Switch range - up to 28.
- Mix and Match: Media modules permit any permutation of fibre types and connectors (multimode / singlemode and ST/SC/MTRJ/SFP) and copper.
- Future Proof: Customers who bought MICE previously and now want to take advantage of new technology such as PoE or Realtime modules need only add a appropriate media module, rather than purchasing an entire switch.
- Scalability: Let your switch grow with your network.
- Reduced spares: Common modules in use across the plant decrease spares holding requirements and hence costs.
- Expandability: All 4 port MICE backplanes can be expanded using the two slots MB-2T base expansion module which easily slots onto the MICE backplane.

Hirschmann MICE Selection Tips & Tricks
- Part numbers tend to reflect the number of 100Mbps ports available - an MS20-08 can accommodate 8 ports total, and MS30-16 can accommodate 16 ports (as well as the Gigabit ports designated by MS30).
- The switch and router products are physically different, there is no upgrade path from switching to routing functionality.
- 2 slot bases (MS20-08 for example) can not accommodate the 2 slot expansion base.
- LED diagnostics are available through the 'Select' button on the front of the base unit.
- MS30 accommodates only 2 Gigabit ports, for 4 Gigabit ports select the model MS4128.
- The 19" rail adapter allows a fully populated MICE assembly to be mounted in a 19" rack, leaving room for a power supply.
