Hirschmann commenced operations as an industrial connectors business in Germany in 1923, inventing the alligator clip and banana plug amongst other innovations. The Industrial Ethernet division was formed in 1986, and also displayed a capability to pioneer product development.
Hirschmann now provides a comprehensive range of Industrial Ethernet products for mission critical networks in manufacturing, transport, shipping and utilities. As ethernet becomes the dominant industrial network, demands on networks grow and managed ethernet switches become more essential. With an impressive range of switches, Hirschmann also provide entry level unmanaged switches, Layer 3 Routers, WLAN (WiFi), firewalls for network security, media converters and network management software.

In 2008, Hirschmann was acquired by Belden, who have continued and accelerated the product development for which Hirschmann are renowned.
