OpenBAT Family from Hirschmann™

2016-04-18_11-37-50.jpgThe access points and clients in the new OpenBAT family can be mounted on DIN rails (BAT-R) or installed on walls or masts in indoor and outdoor (BAT-F) areas. Available with or without conformal coating, the devices have an operating temperature range of 0°C to +60°C or -40°C to +70°C. All versions support the IEEE 802.11n transmission standard, with PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, Public Spot and VPN Gateway as options.

access point has one or two wireless modules and Gigabit Ethernet ports with tried and tested M12 connection technology (IP67 version), one of which is configurable as a combo port (fiber optic/twisted pair). A serial M12-RS232 interface and a USB port are also provided. For redundant power supply using potential-free relay contacts, a choice of freely combinable PoE power packs for IEEE 02.3af, 24/48 V DC, 60/120/250 V DC or 110/230 V AC is available.

WLAN Controller

More and more WLAN applications are being used in the field of automation. The IEEE 802.11n standard with the OpenBAT Family enables data rates of up to 450 Mbit/s while simultaneously extending the range and stability of wireless transmissions. The Hirschmann™ BAT-Controller WLC was especially developed for this purpose. There is no need to replace existing Hirschmann™ access points from the BAT range with new devices designed to use controllers – these access points can be operated either with or without controllers. This means that your WLAN can be extended step by step and – when it becomes necessary – supplemented by a Hirschmann™ BAT-Controller WLC.

Hirschmann™ BAT-Controller WLC are available in six versions:

  • Hirschmann BAT-Controller WLC25, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000. These solutions
    can managed from 25 to 1000 access points respectively.


This basic and inexpensive client can be cost-effectively deployed in any WLAN installation where there is no need for high-end clients. The BAT-C supports the new IEEE 802.11n transmission standard.

c9f684879c.jpgFast roaming ensures an uninterrupted connection while switching from one radio cell to another. Other features include management and encryption functions, a temperature range of -40° C to +70° C, a 24 V power supply, and a compact design. All this means the client is suitable for a wide range of stationary and mobile WLAN applications in industrial environments. Thanks to its E1 approval, it can also be used to set up a wireless connection from buses and other vehicles to an Ethernet network.

The robust metal housing can be installed vertically or horizontally and requires very little space due to its compact measurements. The client is simple to configure thanks to an integrated web interface. Management can be performed using either SNMP MIB 2 or an AT command interface. Secure encryption functions are available in the form of IEEE 802 11i, WPA2 and PSK/AES. Two LEDs on the front of the housing indicate the current network and power supply statuses.

Operating at either 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz, the radio module's antenna connection is designed for a N-type plug. An M12 port is provided for connecting to Ethernet networks.

The 24 V power supply also uses this type of connection, a method that has proved to be extremely reliable in industrial environments over a good many years.

With the BAT-C client, Belden has added a device to its Hirschmann™ BAT range of products that is inexpensive but nevertheless suitable for use in industrial applications. Product manager Olaf Schilperoort: "This client has been specially developed for less-demanding WLAN applications. In other words, the customer is paying for only those features he really needs. Thanks to its robust and compact construction, the BAT-C can be employed in the manufacturing area as well as in production logistics or the transport sector."
