MACH1040 - Über-Robust Gigabit Ethernet Switch/Router
18-Aug-2010Hirschmann Industrial Ethernet has introduced a new Layer 3 software that makes it possible to use all Gigabit Ethernet switches from the Hirschmann MACH1040 family as routers. Using wire-speed technology makes for extremely fast functions, which include not only static and dynamic routing, but also multicast routing (DVMRP, IGMPv1/v2/v3, PIM-DM) and router redundancy (VRRP, OSPFv2, RIPv1/v2).

High Performance
Hirschmann MACH 1040 switches are designed specifically for use in the power industry, and other locations requiring a high standard of EMI tolerance. They can be connected to form sub-networks, which in turn can be linked up to each other. Due to their fanless design, their ability to withstand temperatures from -40°C to +70°C and their Fast HiPER-Ring redundancy mechanism, these switches guarantee the highest degree of availability for production facilities. Moreover, they also support PROFINET and EtherNet/IP.
Standards and Approvals Compliance
MACH1040 switches meet a wide variety of standards and have a range of approvals – including IEC 61850, IEEE 1613, EN 50121-4, EN 50155, NEMA TS2, cUL 508, cUL 1604 C1 Div2 and GL – and they offer both high vibration-resistance and extensive resilience to magnetic fields and electrostatic discharges. Two freely combinable power modules (24/48 Vdc, 110/230 Vac and dc) are available to ensure redundant power supply.
Numerous Port Configurations
The 16-Gigabit Ethernet combo ports (10/100/1000 BASE-TX), which can be optionally equipped with SFP fibre optic transceivers (100/1000 BASE-FX/SX/LX/LH), allow flexible configuration of fast networks with different topologies, which can be altered or expanded at a later stage without incurring additional costs. In addition, all ports support Version 2 of the Precision Time Protocol (IEEE 1588 V2) with a precision of 30ns and, as an optional extra, Power over Ethernet (IEEE 802.3af).
Equipped with the latest in energy-saving chip technology, 1U high MACH1040 switches are designed to be mounted in 19" switch cabinets. The Gigabit Ethernet combo ports are located either on the front or the rear of the housing. The switches boot up in just ten seconds. A USB interface, via which the auto-configuration adapter ACA 21-USB can be connected, is available for storing and, if necessary, retrieving all configuration data as well as the operating system.
Easy Monitoring and High Availability
The status of every switch can be monitored locally using indicator contacts, while detailed information can be displayed via a standard web browser. Additional management functions available include command line interface, Management Information Base, Telnet, HTTP, TFTP and SFP Management. The switches also have an SNMP interface which facilitates the use of network management software such as Industrial HiVision.
Redundancy methods such as Fast HiPER-Ring, MRP (IEC ring function), trunking, link aggregation, MSTP and RSTP ensure a high level of network availability. Security mechanisms include access control in accordance with IEEE 802.1x, IP and MAC port security, RADIUS authentication as well as SNMP V3 and SSH.
With their new Layer 3 software, the Hirschmann MACH1040 switches are fully fledged routers. "The combination of 16-Gigabit Ethernet ports with a fanless design yet still providing a temperature range of -40°C to +70°C already makes these switches unique. Now, with the new routing function added, they have yet another unique position in the industrial ethernet market" says Daanet Marketing Manager Mark Elrick
